Investments that Matter

We help public and non-profit organizations assess and manage their strategic investments to provide real returns of improved performance. While organizations want to take advantage of advances in e-Government or e-commerce, geographic information systems, and other technologies, they also want to be sure they will realize benefits worthy of the cost. Our approaches can help clients get the most from any strategic investments, whether in information technology, in other systems or equipment, or in developing their organization’s human resources. We can help clients assess the benefits of their investments on several levels, including expected organizational process improvements, service performance gains, improved outcomes for customers or the community, and improved financial results.

Our Models and Tools

We can provide clients with models for testing the range of benefits they can expect under different scenarios, to help them adjust their investment plans to increase their value, and to help them justify their investments to budget or policy officials. Depending on the situation, we may use some of our performance measurement models and analysis tools, such as performance logic models, and methods for analyzing the productivity of professionals, discussed under the line of business Performance Measurement that Matters.

Performance Management of Investments

We can help clients develop a performance management approach to get high value return once they have made their strategic investments. We can help them set up systems to track initially expected benefits, analyze new applications as they are developed for existing technology, and regularly review progress in achieving value for the organization and the community. This approach can be narrowly focused on a specific strategic investment, or could be part of a broader organizational strategic management process, such as the "balanced scorecard" approaches described under the line of business Strategies that Matter".
